{TOGETHERNESS} Dom & Beth
Ack! So I had a post almost ready to go- and the internet ate it. Stupid, hungry internet!
But I’m finally back to do a real post on the shoot I got to do with my friends Dom and Beth and their sweet baby girl.
Yes, I’m well aware that this shoot was done, literally, months ago, and I know how bad it is that I’m just blogging about it, but yeah. Let’s just blame it on pregnancy, beautiful fall weather, housework, house guests, and just life.
There’s my excuses. Now, moving on.
I learned a lot from this shoot. Well, not from the shoot so much as going through the photos afterwards and seeing all the things I wish I’d done differently and will change next time.
But there were some shots that were just perfect.
All in all, it was a very educational shoot. I learned some new things about light and how to use it to your best advantage. Of course, I learned most of this stuff after the fact, but still, I did learn something.
Thanks Dom & Beth for being a few more guinea pigs for me.
{TOGETHERNESS} Sneak Peek: Dom & Beth
{You Capture} Me Capture
Ok, not really this week’s assignment for You Capture was ‘Photographer’s Choice’. So I decided to go ahead and challenge myself with something. I’ve had good intentions of getting in on Jess’ Facing Myself Challenge, but just never got it done. Head on over here to see what it’s all about. So I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone, so to speak- challenge myself for the ‘Photographer’s Choice’ assignment while at the same time doing my self portrait for Facing Myself.
But enough talk.
This. is. me. No, generally I don’t go sit on the front porch floor first thing in the morning- probably because it’s very dewy at that time of day. As evidenced by the wet knee on my jeans. We seriously need to get some chairs to put out there.
But ANYWAYS! Yeah.
That’s my second favorite hoodie (my favorite one is in the wash) bunched up above my fat.
Ok, you know what? The whole point of Facing Myself is not to pick your photo apart and look at all the stuff you hate. There’s a plethora of little things in this image that I don’t particularly care for. But I’m not going to nit-pick through them. Because this is me. And for the most part I’m not ashamed of who I am.
This is me headed out for my early morning walk. This is me at least five times a week, going out to get my heart pounding and my chest pumping, trying to avoid the 70 lbs. of weight I gained with my last pregnancy.
This is me, totally in love with the “Golden Hour” of morning.
This is me, the person who would totally be a morning person because it’s such a lovely time of day if it didn’t mean getting up so early.
Those are my favorite pair of sneakers ever. Those are my baggy jeans- I bought a size 24 because the 22s felt too tight, only to get home and realize that they were stretch jeans.
This is me. Not totally comfortable in my own skin, but dealing with it.
{You Capture} Signs
Due to my own privacy issues, I decided against shooting any of the cool “Welcome to So-and-So Small Town” signs around here. But this was the shot I kinda was hoping to get. Funny how you have an idea in your head of the shot you’re going for and then you can never find a “Curves Ahead” sign or when you do, you can’t get the right angle to demonstrate the, um, curve in the road. Yeah, it’s really very maddening. Ok, whatever. I had kind of given up on finding the right spot on the road and was almost home when I looked in the rearview mirror and saw something that looked like the scene in my head. So I screeched to a stop from 70 m.p.h (because that’s how fast you’re allowed to go here), turned around, and got my shot. In between all the custom harvesting crews and their semis that were headed out of town (wheat harvest is over here). And, um, yeah.
Sometimes I wish I had “Curve Ahead” signs along the road of my life.
Oh, and I’m always forgetting to link back to You Capture. Bad me!
{You Capture} Morning
Iiiiiiiiiiiiiii’m baaaaack! Finally. Been long enough. You Capture, I’ve missed you.
Sadly, I have nothing too fancy to share.
Just 7:30 a.m. off my front deck. I was planning to grab a really great something on my walk yesterday morning, but then, halfway down the road, I turned my camera on and got an error code. Ok. So I had to wait until I made my way back to the house and got out the users manual. Only to have it, apparently, fix itself. By then I was too lazy and didn’t feel like taking another walk any further than the deck. Pregnancy does that sort of thing to you.
Yep, you read that right. *wink*
{FUN!} Kids: Destiny, Nick, and Connor
So. For the rest of my shoot with my cute cousins. Did I mention that their my cousins? Well, they are, whether they like it or not.
Originally this was going to be a family shoot, but things came up and their dad couldn’t make it. So their mom dressed them up and we headed back to the woods.
And let me just say that, while I don’t blame them, none of the three was really in the mood for picture-taking that evening. But I think we got some cute shots.
Found some gorgeous light filtering down through the trees.
The little tiger we found in the weeds…
*sigh* Those baby blues!
I’m going to have to classify this shoot as more of a mini-session actually- the mosquitos were pretty much just dreadful and chased us out of the woods very quickly.
“The hills are alive…”
And that, in about an hour, was a wrap.
We jumped back in the pick-up and hightailed it back to the air-conditioned house and away from the mosquitos.
{FUN!} Sneak Peak: Destiny, Nick, and Connor
Yes, I’m back from the epic road trip of ’10. Tired, getting over a cold, slowly unpacking, the works, blah. But I’ll write more about all that over at my personal blog, Awful, Beautiful.
I’m so excited about the different shoots I got to do while on the road and even more excited to show you my favorite shots!
Today will just be a sneak preview of the shoot I did with these cute kids.
Destiny, ever so grown up.
Nick, the little stud.
And Connor, the ever-loving cutie pie.
Now I need to get back to editing the gazillion and a half shots I have from this shoot and others.
Goodbye forever.
The Let’s Kick This Thing Off Special is a great, great, cool thing- both for you, the potential client, and for me, the photographer who needs to build her portfolio and get her name spread by word of mouth.
What this special amounts to:
- Any type portrait shoot offered by TLBP
- One hour
- One proof book of edited photos
-$15!
Basically, these are mini-sessions at a deeply discounted price. And I do mean deeply. In return, if you’re pleased with my work, I would love for you to refer your friends to me. Sometime down the road, I intend to do some kind of special for those people who give referrals but that’s a little ways down the road- first I have to have some initial clients that are happy with their photos.
If you’re someone who’s here because you saw the below photos at the Hettinger County Fair and wondered who I was, I’m so glad you’re here and can’t wait to meet you!
I know, the About TLBP page says I live in Bowman, but that’s just because I haven’t updated that section yet. I actually live in Mott. Well, not in Mott, but near Mott. That’s not to say I won’t travel to Bowman (or Dickinson, or Elgin, or Glen Ullin, or wherever)- I just don’t live there anymore.
If you’re interested in a regular length sessions, please check out my Packages and Pricing page.
Oh, and I should add here that I’m leaving on a month-long vacation/work/family trip in two days, so I won’t be able to schedule any shoots until the middle of August. I know, inconvenient, but I hope you won’t forget me!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
A Little Country Church
This weekend, while finding our way to the lake over the back roads, we came across this beautifully kept up church. The next evening, while driving home from the lake, it was about 7:30- the Golden Hour here. And I had to stop and take some shots.
The inside. It’s actually set up pretty modern. Apparently they occasionally have weddings and funerals there. Up there in the front right-hand corner the preservation committee had hung various pictures and newspaper clippings including the church from down through the years.
We managed to stumble across this place on the exact same weekend as the local centennial celebration, so there were a lot of recent entries in the guestbook, and at the front gate we actually met the lady who is the last surviving member of the committee who took it upon themselves to keep this rock of the community from rotting away.
I’m a bit of a history fiend and absolutely love capturing old buildings, particularly churches. And I can only imagine what an incredible location this would make for a bridal session.
This is truly a little country church- you can see in the distance, behind my watermark, the bins and the farmstead. And, in my mind, this church, while it may not have a congregation that meets in it regularly anymore, is still a monument to the God and the people who built this country strong.
